How an Editor Valuing a Manuscript / Writing Paper ?

An editor is the first person who read the manuscript that sent to him or her. He read the works of the authors. As a reader, the editor is not only just reading it, but the editor also assesses and considers whether the book is appropriate and useful to the readers?

In essence, the incoming manuscript has two characteristics:

1. Manuscript that written by amateur writer and

2. Manuscript that written by professional writer.

Most of manuscripts that received by any editor on this earth came from amateur writers rather than professional writers. Amateur are such as a teacher of a profession, a counselor and so forth, but the way on writing is still "raw" or imitate the style of other writers so it is not original. A Trained editor is very agile; he or she recognizes the writing style like that. There's even an editor who said that he received a manuscript from an amateur group (90%) and from professional groups (10%).

Amateur writers are generally had manuscript that poor of argumentation and less attention to systematic writing (whether for the mass media or whether to field of his the writers’ own). The difficulty, instead of 10% is what the editor hopes to obtain a good paper and qualified in terms of content and form.

Newspaper or magazine publishers have their own way to process the manuscripts that they receive. Every publisher has a "house-style" which applies at the publisher. The manuscript that signed to the secretariat is forwarded to the "first reader" and then submitted to the editor that takes the responsibility of the publishing (after selection). Professional authors expect something from the paper or manuscript, as well as professional editors expect something from a published writing.

Well, now why a manuscript or paper is returned? The reasons are below:

  • Because the authorship is not compatible with the mission of the media that is concerned or too patronizing.
  • Because the authorship is something like the bouquet that had been loaded.
  • Too long for a particular topic or may also be too short.
  • When it comes to creative writing product, perhaps writing is too weak in terms of character (the figure), the plot and the atmosphere in certain parts of the writing.
  • Too heavy with theories that may be exhausting the reader or the smell of propaganda that is unpopular with readers.
  • The writing is sloppy or hard to read.

It would be wise if the author learned from that mistake and try to do better. For that, if the manuscript is returned, then there are some things you should do:

  • Archive the Manuscript.
  • Consult with a professional writer about the location of the deficiency.
  • Fix and type again, and send to other media.

A Media that has been bona fide sometimes include a brief description of the cause of your article why it is returned. For that you just fix it and send to other media that his vision according to the article. However, a brief description is sometimes confusing because the format has finished and the editor sometimes with arbitrarily assesses our articles with that format. It happened because so many articles that sent by writers, the editors do not have much time to read entirely, only quality articles that will be taken by the editorial.

Respond for Not Returned Articles

All authors hope that their article will be published or at least restored if it not published. In fact, there are so many manuscripts were not returned. Anticipating a case like this, the authors should archive in a computer or copying the article before it is sent. If it is not published, and editors do not return it, your manuscript or paper can be typed or printed again to be sent to other media.

How long does it take to make sure the article will not be published? It is very varied. For daily newspapers, it is usually between one until two weeks since it is sent; for tabloid (weekly), usually between two weeks to a month since it is sent. For monthly print media like magazines, it is usually taking between two to four months from the time of sent. For that if within that time frame your article has not been passed, then your article or paper should be typed or printed again and send it again to other print media.

Period of time that intended here is not raw, it only according to the average course of our experience. Sometimes there is an article published after New Year.
