The printer is a tool to print all papers, documents, which appear on the screen, and others contained in a computer including data on storage. The printer includes an output device which is called as peripheral.
Several types of printers that are in the market as follows:
- Letter Quality
- Dot matrix
- Thermal printer
- Ink Jet Printer
- Laser
- Plotters
a. Letter Quality
Letter quality printer is a printer that can print with a quality like a typewriter, so the writing is solid and clear. Letter quality printer is using element type to print the letters, such as IBM electric typewriter which uses ball elements. Weaknesses of letter quality printer are the speed is in average between 8-80 characters per second, and it cannot print graphic.
b. Dot Matrix
Dot matrix is the creation system of characters from a number of points or dots. Matrix printer has the element which consists of needles that suppress the tape so that it can print on paper. How to print is called impact. The advantages of this printer is the printing speeds reached 400 cps, which is five times faster and can print graphic, but not as good as the quality of letter quality printer. The weakness of this printer is that the way of the printer to print from left to right, then from right to left on the next line, so to print one line of text will be slow.
c. Thermal Printer
The quality of thermal printer is the same with dot matrix printer because it works with the same principle, only thermal printer uses heat and not pressure or impact. The advantages of thermal printers are more quiet (not noisy) and has high speed, 6 pages per minute, the weakness is the need to use special paper.
d. Ink jet
Inkjet printers use ink. The spraying is using an electric charge. It is so quiet and has high speed i.e. the speed up to 270 cps, and can equipped with colored ink. The weakness of ink jet printers is we have to use special paper so that the mold must be dry before other color on it.
e. Laser Printer
The way of this kind of printer work is similar to copy machines, the difference with the photocopiers is in reflection focused on a rotating cylinder laser printer while the shadow created by a point per point by the semiconductor laser. The quality of the writing laser is similar to letter-quality because dad quality consists of 1cm with 750 points. Print speed is 8 pages per minute. The disadvantage is the expensive.
f. Interface Printer
Interface printer can be connected in series with a computer with RS-232C or parallel with Centronic. But because its technology is not the world’s default computer’s printer, then to run the printer on the different computer type, we can use the software.
g. Plotters
Plotter is one of output equipment used to draw graphs and others. The difference with other printers is it is using digital system named analog. The example of graph plotter is ECG (Electro Cardiograph) is a a tool used to determine the potential of the heart beat, or a seismograph needle to record the vibration of the earth. Plotter is used to draw graphics on paper, plastic, or in transparent plastic for use in projectors.
