Computer Crime Definition

Definition of computer crime continues to change with the use and misuse of computer reaching new realm. When computer was first introduced, computer crime is simply defined as a form of white collar crime that committed in a computer system. When computer applications expand, especially in telecommunications, computer crime is also widespread and began to get the violation; computer is used directly or indirectly in the crime.

The most appropriate definition for the current computer crime is any illegal act by using their computer technology knowledge to commit crimes such as theft of hardware and software, data manipulation, illegally accessing a computer system with a phone, and change the program into all of these definitions. Another characteristic in this definition is computer can be actively or passively involved in a crime. Illegal conversion of data in a database, file destruction, and the use of groundbreaking program (hacking) to gain access into a system are examples of active involvement in the computer. In contrast, passive involvement means the computer becomes a tool in the crime, but charges of computer crime may not be relevant.

With the proliferation of computer crimes, thus cyberlaw is imposed. Cyberlaw is a law or rule that governing the legality of all activities on the internet, including consequences for those who violate.

Types of Computer Crime

Internal Computer Crime

It is a conversion program that generates the display function is not authorized (unauthorized) in a computer system. The violation is usually done by computer programmers that have extensive computer knowledge. A programmer can modify an existing program so that it appears to run normally, but actually carry out the functions that are not desirable when certain logical conditions are met. In these circumstances, the programmer is able to delete files, modify data, or cause damage to the system. Because the crime took place many years, they are named, such as Trojan horses, logic bombs, and trap doors to mark the different programming techniques in carrying out functions informally. The virus is a new type of internal computer crime which is not just a set of instructions that perform the function is not official, but also secretly inserted it in another program. With the deployment process, the virus is transmitted through a system to another when an infected program from being copied or transmitted.

Telecommunications Crime

It includes illegal access or the use of a computer system via telephone. Hacking program is trying to find a valid access code for a computer system with continuous system calls with randomly generated code. With a valid code found in this way, the system can be accessed and the cost charged to customers who do not know anything.

Phreaking

Phreaking is a crime through telephone calls that made by electronic devices which emit a tone signaling transactions remotely normal on the phone system. Illegal devices cheat the system into believing that the telephone long distance rates are officially processed.

Computer Manipulation Crime

It is involving data alteration or creation of record in a system for the development of other crimes. Basically all the fraud in financial institutions is made by creating a fake account or modifying data in an existing account for embezzlement.
