What are Advantages and Disadvantages of Network Topologies?

After I had posted a topic about network topology definition, now I want to post about the advantages and disadvantages of each network topology.

Computer network topology design is the shape both physically and logically that is used to build a computer network. There are 3 basic computer networks topologies, are as follow:

1. Linear Bus
PC1 PC2 PC3 PC4
I I I I
Servers===================== backbone
I I I I
PC5 PC6 PC7 PC8
In a linear bus topology all PC (terminal) is connected to the data paths (buses) that form a straight line (linear). Thus, the data sent through all the stations on that route. If the address matches the address data is passed, then the data is received and processed. However, if the address does not match, then the data will be ignored by the terminal through which a search and found the address will be forwarded to the appropriate address.

Linear Bus Network Topology Advantages:

  • Saving cable
  • Easy to develop
  • Does not require central control
  • Layout simple cable
  • The addition and reduction of the terminal can be done without disturbing the current operation.

Linear Bus Network Topology Advantages Disadvantages:

  • Fault detection and isolation of very small
  • High traffic density
  • Lack of data security guaranteed
  • The speed will decrease when the number of users (users) increases
  • It takes a repeater for long distance

2. Ring
PC1 server
_ | _ /
PC2 - (_ _) - PC3
|
PC4
In ring topology all PC (terminal) is connected to the data paths (buses) that form a circle. Thus, each terminal in the network is interdependence each other. Consequently, if there is damage to one terminal, then the entire network will be disrupted.

Ring Network Topology Advantages:

  • Saving cable
  • Do not need a special cable bundle handling’
  • Can serve the dense data traffic

Ring Network Topology Disadvantages:

  • Sensitive error
  • Development of more rigid network
  • Slow
  • Damage to the media sender / terminal work to paralyze the entire network

3. Star
PC1 Server
| /
PC2 - HUB - PC3
|
PC4
In the star topology all PC (terminal) is connected to the central terminal (server) that provides a special communication lines to the terminal that will communicate. Thus, each data transmission will occur through the central terminal.

Star Network Topology Advantages:

  • The most flexible because it is easy cabling
  • The addition or reduction of the terminal is very easy and does not interfere with other parts of the network
  • Centralized control to facilitate the detection and isolation of faults and easy network management

Star Network Topology Disadvantages:

  • Wasteful cable
  • Centralized control (HUB), so the critical element
  • Need special handling of the cable bundle

In addition to the above three basic topology there are also other topologies is the result of the development of the three topologies. Another topology, among others:

  1. Tree / hierarchical-is the result of a combination of bus and star topology that looks like a branching tree;
  2. Mesh-topology is the result of a combination of bus, star, and ring;
  3. Web-each terminal in this topology can be interconnected with other terminals via several links, etc...

That’s all about advantages and disadvantages of network topology.
